2023: Summer Camp

Full Photo Album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/dT2QBF9ZR3kdT1JQ7 Day 1: Troop 2319 arrived safely and toward the front of the in-processing line. Usually it takes two and a half hours to do medical check-in, but today was only 22 minutes due to dropping the forms off early. Orientation and camp set up went smoothly, but the opening campfire was curtailed after 20 minutes when the rain came down heavily. Add / Drop went as well as could be expected. We did not get extra slots for welding or water skiing, but did get 7 extra slots for the Ocoee whitewater trip. All is well. -Col. Tom Day 2: We had a wet night. Two and a half inches of rain and 18 mph winds were a struggle to sleep through, but the weather today was a perfect 70 and sunshine. Classes began in the morning with some minor adjustments. The 1st Aid MB in camp is half finished. Only the practical hands on tasks remain. 8 Scouts went on the river today. The water was running faster, but there were fewer rapids due to the rain raising the water levels. Lots of individual free time in the afternoon. An Appalachian Folkfest after dinner and an overnight canoe trip for some. -Col. Tom Welch Day 3: We had perfect weather again today. The 12 who went on the canoe overnighter paddled in across the lake just before breakfast making an idealic setting. Classes continued and we finished the 1st Aid merit badge. It was a big day for mail. I looked like Santa with a bulging bag of packages. We even had the chance to sing happy birthday to a special Scout. Every one scattered for afternoon activities. The Order of the Arrow had a social after dinner and then everyone pretty much went to the spoof merit badge on Scooby-Doo. -Col. Tom Day 4: Classes continued. It kept threatening to rain all day until it finally opened up in the afternoon. A lot of bonding and cards under the tarps, but not much other activity. Xan has us very close to earning Honor Troop with Traditions. We are well on track. Tonight the first year Scouts went on a 5-mile hike for advancement. The older Scouts went repelling, worked on Honor Troop, went swimming and/ or attended the flag retirement among other things. Not a bad hump day. -Col. Tom Day 5: What a great day! The merit badges are almost complete. It took a while but the Troop is firing on all cylinders. Looks like we will earn Honor Troop with Scouting Traditions. The boys are working really hard. A special shout out to Mason Cox who has us in the running for the Silver Spoon Award (cleanest eating area in the dining hall) thru his diligence as our chowmaster. Most of the boys had off camp activities today, either a raft trip on one of the rivers or a horseback ride. Lots of smiles and adventure stories. We will publish the link to get rafting photos after we get home from camp. Tonight’s special activity is open boating, but we have also been detailed for a shower house cleaning. All set for a big finish tomorrow. Home on Saturday. -Col Tom Day 6: For the final day of camp, scouts finished up their remaining merit badges, adults watched and cheered on campers participating in the Mile Swim, and a camp wide cardboard boat race was taken on.. We didn’t win, not even close, but the scouts had fun and that’s what counts! The night was finished off with closing campfire and picking up an absolute mountain of advancement materials to sort and enter!   Final Stats!

2023-06-03: Addison Elementary Bridge Repair

We’re right in that sweet spot between school & summer camp when most folks are out of town, so huge shout out and thank you to all those who helped with the Addison Elementary School Bridge Repair Service Project on Saturday. It wasn’t an Eagle Project, just something the troop offered to take on. We replaced rotten and unsafe parts of the bridge and fence railings, as well as added a few more structural braces to provide a little bit more stability to the bridge. Thank you Mr. Kerns for planning and organizing this awesome project!   *And also thank you Mike & Cole W. who were at the project for nearly the entire time, but had to head out mere minutes before a group picture was taken at the end (sorry!)   Full Photo Album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/SF6estuBdpRKWXXh6

2023 Nat’l BSA Conv

Today, scouts from both 2319 B & G were honored to serve as the opening color guard for the 2023 BSA National Convention! It required a painful 4:45am wake up so they could be downtown for the 5:45am practice, but it was well worth it. We are very proud of our scouts. Thank you for everyone who attended!   Full Photo Album Photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/ToywbC4KdnvfM3zA9

2023-05-12: Watersports Weekend

This past weekend had to be one of the most fun weekend outings we’ve done yet! We headed up to Scoutland On Lanier Scout Camp for a weekend of watersports fun. We arrived just before dark and got setup on Friday, but this outing was all about Saturday… Scouts spent all day in kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, swimming, and of course tubing! I don’t think I saw an upset face all day!! But don’t take my word for it, follow the link for the full album as there were just too many pictures to share this time!   Phot Album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/oEisFMdtcRCjx7XN9

On Friday, we headed up to Skymont Scout Reservation, a camp we have never been to before, for a weekend of fun and relaxation. The drive was long, but getting see a new camp was great! A few scouts practiced some advancement, everyone spent a good chunk of the day exploring the camp, some went fishing, a few played some disc golf in the afternoon, and a lot of scouts were able to complete their Second Class, First Class, and Camping Merit Badge Cooking Requirements. The weather on Saturday couldn’t have been more perfect, what a great time it is to be out camping! Full Photo Album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/yjEcWd38QJ5oaJi18

2023-04-23: Another Northern Tier Prep in the Bag!

This past weekend, we had another group of scouts take on a Northern Tier Prep weekend. The weathered severe storms on Friday Night, thankfully the rain was gone by Saturday morning which lead to a near perfect weather. Scouts learned about how to pack the packs used to transport gear at Northern Tier and practiced wet entering & portaging canoes! It looks like they had a great time, thank you Steve Carlin for putting together and running this training for our scouts to get them ready for this summer! 2023-03-26: Troop Training Campout

This weekend was the troop training camp out at Camp Jameson.  For many this was their first-time camping with the troop. The day started with a little rain but our grub masters preserved and had breakfast ready. After breakfast the older scouts set up their classes in the pouring rain.  We were lucky to have a big pavilion to use.  The older scouts taught the Firem’n Chit, Totin Chit, First Aid Kits, Knots, and Flags to the younger scouts.  Many scouts are now ready to move to scout rank.  After classes we played some games in the field and the woodyard was open.  Time quickly passed and it was time for dinner and the campfire program.  Pranav hosted the campfire program which was enjoyed by all.  We then started a game of manhunt which was unfortunately interrupted.  We were notified that severe weather was on the way overnight and we would have to immediately pack up and leave camp.  By 10pm the entire troop was packed and ready to depart.  We headed back to Highland Plaza for a late night unloading of the trailer.  Everyone had a great time despite the campout being cut short. — Troop Historian Mitchell A. We also want to quickly shout out Doug P. who decided to use some of his free time to learn about Fire Pistons, made his own char cloth, and was able to actually get a fire started from a Fire Piston. Not an easy task to say the least. Great use of you free time Doug! Full Photo Album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Zh7jZgd8otT7kypU9

Weekend at Woodruff

This weekend we headed to Woodruff Scout Camp to have fun camping and hiking. We arrived late Friday night and set up our campsite. On Saturday some scouts and adults went hiking right after breakfast and many scouts completed their trail cooking requirements for the Cooking Merit Badge. The scouts arrived back around noon right before the rain began. The scouts spent the rest of the day playing games, hanging by the fire, and other scouting activities. On Sunday the scout packed up quickly beating the rain that followed right as we left and we headed home.   -Troop Historian Jack H. Full Photo Album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/VWH8A5Ghg6SVqRBVA

2023-01-22: Camp Benjamin Hawkins

This weekend, we headed down south of Atlanta to Camp Benjamin Hawkins for a fun fill weekend of inter patrol games and challenges. We arrived a bit after dark, scouts were split up by patrol and instructed to setup their own campsites as they see fit. On Saturday, patrols challenged each other in fire building, a photo scavenger hunt, surprise cobbler making with mystery ingredients, & wix chixin! The day finished off with a quick campfire program put together by Zachary M. & a big closing campfire just before the rain started moving in. Sunday morning was a bit damp, but we scouts got most of the gear put away fairly quickly and we were on the road and headed home before you knew it.
