Troop 2319 is a Scouts BSA troop located in Marietta, GA. Our scouts are active with Troop, District, & Council events. Our primary mission is to provide a quality and fun scouting program using the traditional Boy Scout methods. We are primarily a youth led organization with meetings, activities, and campouts determined and planned by the youth Senior Patrol Leader and his Patrol Leaders Council.
Our charter organization, Unity North Atlanta, hosted their annual planning meeting after their service today. Between their service and planning meeting, Troop 2319 volunteered to help out by providing and serving lunch as well as some setup and tear down. Unity North was very grateful for the help and it was a great example for how our troop is working to strengthen our relationship with our fantastic charter organization.
The weekend of March 22-24 Troop 2319 participated in Scout Challenge at Bert Adams scout Camp. This was a council wide event in which scouts participated in challenges and games including GaGa Ball, Human Foosball, Giant Angry Birds, Archery, and Basketball. We had a fantastic turn out at our Troop Court of Honor yesterday, which was great because the scouts have been working really hard on new Merit Badges and Rank Advancement over the last few months. Even though it has only bee three months since our last Court of Honor in December, scouts completed and were awarded 19 Rank Advancements and over 30 Merit Badges! Great job guys, that’s a huge achievement. We also were lucky enough have our Unit Commissioner, Mike Lotz, in attendance who was able to award us with our Gold Journey to Excellence 2018 ribbon for the troop flag. Lastly, we were lucky enough to share in the celebration of Crew 2319 with the induction of their founding members. It’s been a busy couple of months and we’re not slowing down. Scout Challenge is right around and with 30 scout and adults registered from our troop, it is sure to be great camp out. Troop 2319 was very busy this past weekend. We had scouts in 3 different locations and two different state, a first for our Troop! We had several of our older more experienced scouters out hiking, getting closer to earning the Backpacking Merit Badge with each step and the bulk of the rest of the scouts went dump camping at Camp Westin on Lake Allatoona. We even had several of our Inaugural Crossovers with us. That’s right, they crossed over into Boy Scouts on Thursday and came out camping with us on Cold Weather Camp Out the very next day. Way to go! We even had a scout in Alabama attending a Leave No Trace Training day and we’re excited for him to bring his new and refreshed knowledge back to the troop. check out some pictures of the Backpacking and Cold Weather Camping weekends below. The troop had a great time at Camp Sidney Dew this weekend. For some scouts, this was the first experience with cold weather camping, but everyone seemed to stay warm and have fun. Most of the scouts worked on their Emergency Preparedness merit badge in the morning and then spent the afternoon exploring this fantastic scout camp. A small group of brave and intrepid scouts and scouters took a brisk 19 mile trek along sections of the Appalachian and Benton Mackaye Trails as part of the backpacking Merit Badge. Rain, cold, and snoring campers did not keep this group from having a great time along the way.
It’s hard to believe we are already having our second court of honor as a troop. It seems like we just held one and already, scouts have earned enough to warrant holding another one. Great work scouts!! As is our new tradition, Unity allowed us to hold our CoH in their main sanctuary, shout out to Unity for letting us use such an awesome space for this! A lot happened at this CoH besides the usual badges and awards generally given out. We had the pleasure of announcing that even though we have only been in existence for half the year, we were able to achieve a GOLD JTE score, we also borught in and donated a ton of bears for a fundraising that Unity was heading up, and our Unit Commissioner, Mike Lotz, and District Director, Jacquelyn Alford were both in attendance. Thank you to everyone who made this happen! That includes thanks to the district and parents for supporting us and a big thanks to all the scouts who took the leap and helped us form our new unit. For our Troop’s December outing, we had a wonderful time at Escalade Rock Climbing Gym where we had a lock in and numerous scouts had the opportunity to finish the climbing merit badge! We had a great turn out and whether they came out to climb or just sit around and play games, everyone had a great time. Several scouts attended Brain Camp, a safety based event put on by Safe America, and it loos like it was a lot of fun! There were a lot of interesting talks by first ponderers as well as dozens of booths from a wide range of safety based organizations promoting everything fro safe driving to healthy living habits!
The troop had a great weekend at Camporall up at Woodruff Scout Camp. The weather was a bit on the colder side, but it was bright and sunny. There were lots of great activities and even a dedicated board/card game area with giant jenga! We had a ton of Weebelos from several packs join us this year and we look forward to seeing many of them at crossover. We ended the night in the main amphitheater and after awards, prizes, and a BIG campfire, we even got to watch a movie on a giant outdoor movie screen.
Unity North held their annual Trunk or Treat event tonight. It was a little damp out, but everyone persevered and made it work. Troop 2319 came out and setup a booth with candy for the kinds and in true troop tradition, coffee for the adults. It was really cool to meet so many people from Unity at one of their events.
This past weekend, the troop had a fantastic weekend working on the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge. We left around 5:30 Friday and when got there, the scouts did a great job and were able to get the main campsite setup and build their survival shelters. The scouts stayed out in their shelters overnight and showed they had what it took to survive in the wilderness. On Saturday we reviewed what should be included in a personal survival kit, multiple methods for purifying water and when each method should be used, and worked on starting fires using methods other than matches or lighters. We had some light showers in the afternoon, but everyone seemed to have a lot of fun with time for work and relaxation. The temperatures dropped to below 40 degrees on Saturday night, but all the scouts woke up easily on Sunday morning allowing the troop to get packed up for an on time return. Overall a great weekend! September 28-30, 2018 On the weekend of the 28th through the 30th of September, Troop 2319 went on a scout outing to camp 175, a beautiful camp site that is right next to Allatoona lake. Having such an amazing campsite allowed us to do many different activities. On the first day at, the troop set up their tents and got the kitchen ready. Later that day scouts skipped rocks into the lake and played a couple of games of man hunt. Everyone had a great time and to bring the day off to a close, a few scouts cooked dessert as a 2nd class requirements. After a good night’s sleep, the scouts woke up to a meal of eggs, sausage, and hash browns made by the troops grub master. After breakfast, the scouts started playing a game of civilization until lunch. The lunch served was turkey, ham and cheese sandwiches with chips. After lunch, some scouts went to swim in the lake while other scouts did several things including getting rank requirements. By 6:30 we all came back to the kitchen and had a meal of tacos and corn for dinner. Then just like the day before, we had scouts make dessert. After dinner we all went to a campfire program where scouts performed several different skits. After the campfire program, senior scouts grabbed a couple of kids to put away the kitchen and to try and pack everything up. At the end of the night, we all went to bed after a great day of scouting. In the morning all the scouts awoke to pack up their tents and to clean up the campsite. Then we all had a breakfast of bagels and bananas. To finalize our campout, we all drove back to our parents at the Old-Time Pottery parking lot. We had our first Court of Honor Monday, September 10th. It was held in the main sanctuary at Unity North Atlanta and was a fantastic event! There were dozens of ranks earned and over one hundred merit badges. Our District Commissioner, Mike Lotz was in attendance as was our District Director, Jacquelyn Alford.
